Review: Cyndi Lauper Memphis Blues Tour

GIRLS Just Wanna Have Fun hitmaker Cyndi Lauper has the perfect pop voice – full of melody, swagger and attitude, writes Graham Walker.

But But can the lady sing the blues?

It turns out she can, as she proves on her new Grammy-nominated blues chart-topping album, Memphis Blues.

Lauper, with a stunning vocal range, passed the live test with flying True Colours when she opened her eight-date UK Memphis Blues Tour this week at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

The Lady Gaga of her time, who has kept reinventing herself, charged through the album, including gutsy highlights Just Your Fool, Shattered Dreams, Early In The Mornin’ and Down Don’t Bother Me.

A five-star performance on and off stage – standing on seats among delighted fans to sing several songs.

The encore included Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Time After Time and True Colours.

Charismatic and flamboyant – one diva not to be missed.

* Memphis Blues is out on Mercer Street Records.
